DIY: Toning Brassy Hair

Hello ladies! I got my hair colored on Saturday and love it...but parts of my hair were brassier than I would've liked. So, I decided to tone it. If you haven't toned your hair before, or don't understand the difference between hair dye and toner - I'll explain it. Whenever we bleach our hair, it strips our hair of it's natural pigmentation, but that will always leave some form of a yellow shade. Some women are blessed with a naturally pale yellow after bleaching and some are blessed with a lovely shade of dandelion yellow...not fun. So, in order to counteract the yellowing, we need violet. Now, TONER is not a purple hair dye. It's similar to dye, but it simply deposits a violet/gray tone onto the hair.

Here's what I did:

I went to Sally's Beauty Supply and bought toner (Wella - T14 - Pale Ash Blonde) and developer (Salon Care - 20 Volume); I spent less than $10.

Mix 1 part toner to 2 parts developer. The bottle of toner is 1.5 oz and the developer is 4 oz, so I mixed the entire bottle of toner with 3/4 the bottle of developer.

Apply all over the hair, and I recommend combing it through your hair to ensure that coverage is even. Grab a snack and wait.

Side note: NO JOKE! After eating this banana my tongue was LITERALLY numb for 30 min?!?! What the heck???

I kept this on for 15 min (TOPS)...next time I'll probably only do 10 min. Keep in mind that the longer you leave it on your hair, the ashier your hair will be. Have you seen the pale violet hair that seems to be all the rage lately?? They simply left the toner on a lot longer than I did.

And here are the results :)

The picture doesn't show it that well but the little whispy hairs that frame my face were seriously purple. If this happens to you, DO NOT FREAK OUT :) after 2-3 washes it will be gone and your hair will be stunning!

XOXO

  1. I love the color you ended up with. I turn brassy quickly because my house is on well water. I prolong washing my hair as long as possible but I also prolong beaching because my hair is long so I try to baby it as much as I can. I was wondering if toning too often is harmful or not. Do you know anything about this?

    1. You can probably get away with Purple Shampoo! If it's just yellow from well water. Wash your hair as normal then add the toning shampoo in let set for 10 minutes rinse and it's gone no need in a chemical even though the toners are much less damaging. I recommend Brass off by Matrix! It's amazing use it in the salon daily!!!

  2. Because toner is basically a semi-permanent product, it does contain some peroxide; but nothing compared to bleach or permanent hair color. As long as your hair isn't at breaking point you should be fine! Also, just make sure to either use a 10 or a 20 volume developer. Any higher may damage your hair.

  3. could I put this on highlighted hair? Its just way too brassy. I'm gonna have to make the boyfriend run to Sally's for me because I'm not leaving the house looking the way I do. It's not that bad until i step outside and then its like, WOW!

  5. Absolutely! Mine was highlighted a few days before I toned it; and I had the same issue...as soon as I stepped into the sunlight I looked like a banana! Just be sure and only leave the toner on your hair for 10-15 minutes TOPS or your hair will be purple!

  7. You may want to check if you have a sulphite allergy/sensitivity (numbness from the banana)

  9. Here's a HUGE hint to help get rid of any purple/blue on your hair - this happens to me every time I use ash color - because of super blonde/gray at my temples - always turns it lavender....get John Frieda Sheer Blonde Luminous Color Glaze, Platinum to Champagne. (Walmart, Walgreens, CVS, they all should have it.). Just but some on the areas that are lavender and leave on for 10 - 15 min. Wash out and BAM, the color is gone. I've been doing it for years! Can't live without the stuff. Oh, and you can't mess your color up, or damage your hair with this stuff, it's a miracle fixer!!

  12. I do my roots brown and highlight with bleach and alternate with brown. I didn't leave the bleach on long enough this time so my blonde was looking too orange. I usually use Wella demi color in 9-10NA but that wasn;t going to cut it this time because the orange was a little too much. SO I tried this. I decided to focus on the places that were orange (roots and shaft) but along the way still got it on the brown. After about 10 minutes I combed it through to the ends then washed it out a minute or two later. It didn't do anything to the brown and the orange is pretty much gone, though I might go back in and hit a few spots again. My very light ends didn't turn purple this way. Thanks for the post!

  13. Is it ok to apply to your hair if you have product in it? Hair spray, root boost, etc? Need to try ASAP!

  15. You may have a latex allergy. Bananas and latex have the same allergic response.
